The East Lyme High School 2010 Empty Bowls Project To Benefit Care & Share |
|
| |
The Ceramics, Culinary, and Graphic Design Departments at East Lyme High School will be hosting an Empty Bowls Project fundraiser at the high school on Thursday, March 25th, 2010 from 5:30-7:30pm. For this event, students in the ceramics program have created hundreds of handmade ceramic bowls that will be for sale that evening. Culinary students will prepare and serve a various selection of soups, and guests at the event will have the opportunity to purchase a hand made ceramic bowl along with their meal. All proceeds from the East Lyme High School 2010 Empty Bowls Project will be donated to Care & Share of East Lyme, Inc. The goal of the East Lyme High School 2010 Empty Bowls Project is to promote hunger awareness and philanthropy by providing students with an opportunity to donate their time and skills to benefit a local hunger fighting organization. While students gain understanding of the value of charitable service, their donation proceeds generate considerable support for this worthy cause.
Empty Bowls is a project of The Imagine/Render Group, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to positive and lasting social change through the arts, education and projects that build community. The Empty Bowls Project is a nation wide project that promotes awareness of world hunger, and provides participants with an opportunity to donate their time and efforts for this cause. This project is entitled Empty Bowls as a reminder to guests of the meal’s purpose. Every time they take their ceramic bowl from their cupboard, they will be reminded that someone’s bowl is always empty and that on this one occasion they helped to alleviate hunger and could do so again at any time.
The art, culinary, and graphic design departments are planning to accommodate an event for up to 350 people. The event will take place in the East Lyme High School Commons, an open and inviting space centrally located on the main floor adjacent to the entrance of the high school. Clay production for East Lyme High School 2010 Empty Bowls Project started at the end of the 2008-2009 school year, currently there are hundreds of bowls already made for the occasion. Culinary students will be producing all of the soup for the evening, as part of a culinary unit on mass food production. Because the culinary department is not equipped with the necessary facilities to mass produce bread, bread as well as desserts will be donated from local area restaurants and businesses. Graphic design students have designed posters and cards to advertise and promote the occasion. Guests at the event will also have the opportunity to enjoy live student entertainment. The East Lyme High School all female Acapella Group Sweet Harmony will be performing, in addition to the very talented acoustic duo Jake Carpenter (a student of East Lyme High School) and Sarah Peck (a student of Old Lyme High School), who are scheduled to headline for the evening. Students from the art, culinary and graphic design departments, in addition to the East Lyme High School Diversity Club will be working as volunteers the night of the event. The 2010 East Lyme High School Empty Bowls Project is generously supported by a grant from the Dime Bank Foundation.

CARE AND SHARE BEGINS 2010 WITH INCREASED NUMBERS AND NEW OFFICERS |
|
| |
Care & Share of East Lyme, Inc. concluded its 20th anniversary year at its January 7 annual meeting with reports of record service numbers, as well as with the election of new board members and 2010 officers.
Newly elected to the Board of Directors were Sally Bender of East Lyme, Kathy Lauzon of Salem, and Kay Whritner of Niantic. Each will serve three year terms as directors, effective January 7, 2010. Officers elected for 2010 are James Hall, president; Sally Bender, vice president; Donna Butler, treasurer and Carol Indorato, secretary. Continuing to serve on the board are Ralph Brisco, Mimi Chayer, and Diane Zukowski.
Following presentation of an engraved plaque of appreciation attached to a stained glass scallop shell reflective of the Care & Share logo, outgoing president, Barbara Buzzelli, was given a standing ovation for her service since 2004 in that leadership role. As noted by past president, Mae Hills, “In her five years as president, Barb has advanced the organization in so many ways, particularly in client and computer communications advancements, such as development of a new website. However, perhaps her greatest attributes may be found in her compassion for anyone with a problem, combined with the extent to which she gives of herself, both in time and energy.”
Looking back on 2009, Care & Share experienced significant increases in both services requested and provided. A total of 162 families received gifts, food, or both, thanks to over 1,000 gifts that were contributed by individuals, businesses, churches, schools and community organizations. Additionally, the pantry fed over 500 people for Christmas/Chanukah with food contributions totaling some 4.7 tons, again thanks to the contributions and volunteer support of community individuals and organizations. Particular credit is attributed to the Lion’s Club, which collaborated with Care & Share volunteers and contributors in supplying quantities of turkeys/chickens, dairy and produce, packing and delivering the holiday baskets.
In addition to its holiday programs and year-round food pantry, Care & Share runs an emergency assistance program throughout the year, which also experienced record increases, including a 55% increase in number of clients helped, a 63% increase in food deliveries and a 24% increase in financial assistance.
“Looking ahead into 2010,” said new Care & Share president James Hall, “we expect a continuation of the increase in requests for assistance which began in 2009. We are very fortunate to be in a community whose generosity enables us to meet this important ongoing challenge.”
A volunteer membership organization, Care & Share turns now to the planning of programs that will be coming up during the spring and summer months, such as seasonal food basket distributions, scholarships and camperships. For further information regarding Care & Share of East Lyme, Inc., its services and volunteer needs, please visit www.CareandShareofEL.org or call 860 739-8502. |

CARE AND SHARE STARTS HOLIDAY SEASON WITH REQUEST FOR HELP |
|
| |
Noting an increase in requests for assistance and, in contrast, a dwindling supply on its food pantry shelves, Care & Share of East Lyme, Inc. begins the approaching holiday season with a call to the community for contributions of food and other items for East Lyme/Niantic and Salem residents in need.
“The winter months, highlighted by the Thanksgiving, Christmas and Chanukah holidays, traditionally are the busiest time for Care & Share,” commented the nonprofit community organization’s president, Barbara Buzzelli. “Not only do requests for food and financial assistance typically peak at this time, but the distribution of holiday gifts of clothing, toys and other items require a major effort in both time and contributions on the part of Care & Share volunteers and members of the community at large. This year, unfortunately, just as the requests for client support have grown, so too has the troubled economy impacted society as a whole. It is with this perspective that we ask for assistance in helping Care & Share reach out to its less fortunate community neighbors. While we have always been thankful in past years to the businesses, organizations and individual donors who have responded so generously with donations, we are doubly appreciative this year.”
A priority need is to replenish the food pantry shelves in preparation for the distribution of Thanksgiving as well as Christmas/Chanukah baskets to community residents in need. Holiday menu items, including stuffing, cranberry sauce, canned potatoes, gravy, corn, green beans, peas and pumpkin are particularly desired. Food items may be delivered to the Care & Share Pantry at 11 Hope Street (behind Niantic Cinema), which is open between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. for collection on the first and third Saturdays of each month throughout the year. Additionally, nonperishable items may be left in Care & Share food collection boxes in most banks, retail and community buildings. Frozen turkeys and chickens should be delivered to the Care & Share Pantry. Food for Thanksgiving should be received by November 14. Food for Christmas/Chanukah baskets should be delivered to Care & Share by December 12.
Members of the community are also invited to bring donated gifts to the Care & Share Holiday Store, which, thanks to the generosity of the Mitchell Trust, is located this year at 51 Pennsylvania Avenue, Niantic. Beginning Monday, Nov. 2, the popular holiday shop will be open to receive donations on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 3:00 – 6 p.m. and Saturdays from 9:00 to noon. Gift contributions, which must be received no later than Friday, December 11, may be dropped off at the store during its hours of operation, or arrangements may be made by calling Care & Share at (860) 739-8502.
Donation suggestions for Christmas/Chanukah include new gifts for any age, male/female, including teens and seniors. With the exception of blankets, linens and outerwear, which may be gently used, all gifts must be new. Suggestions include new toys and other child, teen and adult gifts, as well as gift cards for such items as phone, gas and groceries. For donors who would like to fill specific gift wishes, Care & Share holiday trees tagged with individual or family gift requests may be found at several merchants and banks in Niantic and East Lyme. |

CARE AND SHARE LOOKING FOR MISSING DIAMOND |
|
| |
The search is on. No one has yet claimed the prize diamond, valued at $500, from Care & Share of East Lyme's "Diamond Dig" booth, set up at the July 18, 2009 East Lyme Day Celebration.
For the past six years, Care and Share has run its popular Diamond Dig Benefit, inviting anyone who wants to try their luck to take a chance at uncovering a diamond by digging in a bucket of sand. Each $1 shovelful of sand is sifted to reveal whatever treasure the hopeful digger is able to uncover - in most cases, a diamond-look-a-like zircon. However, hidden along with the 500 essentially beautiful, albeit valueless, zircon gems, was one real diamond.
Anyone who scooped up one or more of the tiny treasures was directed to "register" their findings by giving their name and contact information to a Care & Share volunteer and then stop by the adjacent Northern Light Gems booth to see if they had uncovered the real thing. Sadly, although all the buried stones had been uncovered by the afternoon's end, the real diamond remains unidentified.
"Maybe in the confusion of the day, or with the numbers of people waiting for an appraisal, the holder of the true diamond didn't understand the process and simply walked away," said Vince Martin, volunteer coordinator of the popular booth. "Hopefully, they will now read this article and take their findings to Northern Light Gems on Pennsylvania Avenue, Niantic, for an appraisal." The zircons, along with one true diamond, were all donated by Northern Light Gems owner and jeweler, Antonio Suarez.
Anyone still holding treasures from the Diamon Dig that have not been appraised should be sure to take them to NOrthern Light Gems - you may be holding the winning diamond! |

CARE & SHARE HONORS FOUNDERS AT 20TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION |
|
| |
When Gail Lundin, Debbie Mandel, Connie Rue and Wendy Wasserman got together in 1988 to see what they could do to assist town neighbors in need, they never imagined that twenty years later they and the organization that grew out of their thinking, Care & Share of East Lyme, Inc., would be recognized on a day officially proclaimed as Care & Share Day in the Town of East Lyme.
As more than 90 volunteer members, supporters and community friends gathered on June 11 at Niantic Sportsman’s Club, Care & Share president, Barbara Buzzelli, remarked on the phenomenal growth of the organization that had begun as the inspiration of four women with a simple desire to serve others. She then presented each with a delicate glass scallop shell and engraved plaque of appreciation, specially designed for the event by artist Karen Thissell.
Speaking on behalf of the four honorees, Debbie Mandel explained that the idea of using a scallop shell for the organization’s logo grew out of the name of the former Seashell Restaurant, where the four first conceived the idea for the fledgling organization. She went on to recall that when the East Lyme Chamber of Commerce agreed to their suggestion that a holiday collection be made for those in need, Thanksgiving baskets were provided to eight local families.
Today, Care & Share of East Lyme, which is incorporated as a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, has some 80 active volunteers providing either food, financial or holiday assistance to approximately 154 families (500+ individuals) in the East Lyme/Niantic and Salem area. Care & Share maintains a year-round food pantry, several special food basket and holiday programs, including a holiday store for clients, as well as an Emergency Assistance program, annual scholarships and camperships.
Observing that after 20 years, the legacy of the founders lives on, East Lyme First Selectman Paul Formica noted that there is both good and bad news. “The bad news,” he said, “is that there is still a need. The good news is that because of you, Care & Share is here, providing its heart and soul, 24 hours a day, to those in need, and that’s what makes our town great.” Adding that he looks forward to seeing this work continue, he then announced that within the next 20 days, he expects to establish a new vision committee, the purpose of which will be to review all existing town-owned buildings with an eye towards how they are used, as part of a 20-year plan. Care & Share presently houses its food pantry in a town-owned building on Hope Street behind the Niantic Cinemas and has been talking with the town about facilities options for the future.
Formica concluded his remarks by reading from an official proclamation establishing June 11, 2009 as Care & Share Day in the Town of East Lyme and citing the dedication of volunteer time and talent through which Care & Share “helps to develop the potential and self-confidence and life skills of its clients, [becoming] a very big part of the East Lyme community and…a very valuable group to assist those in need.”
State Representative Ed Jutila wrapped up the evening with best wishes to the founders and many friends and volunteers present, reinforcing the pervasive feeling of gratitude for all that the organization has done throughout its 20 years.

A nonprofit, volunteer organization, Care & Share operates a year-round food pantry for the benefit of East Lyme/Niantic and Salem residents in need.
Nonperishable food items, including canned fruits, tuna, canned meats such as beef stew, hash or Spam, as well as canned macaroni, including Ravioli/Spaghetto's, Mac & Cheese, cold cereal, juice, and dry milk are particularly needed. well
as with the election of new board members and slate of 2009 officers. As

CARE & SHARE OF EAST LYME CLIENTS BENEFIT FROM COMMUNITY GENEROSITY |
|
| |
If there was ever any doubt that Care & Share of East Lyme, Inc. is an organization of neighbors helping neighbors, all one needs to do is hear the story of this year’s community participation. In a time when national headlines tell of low food pantry supplies and lagging holiday retail sales, Care & Share volunteers can only exclaim over the generosity of area residents and all that they did to wrap-up the year for clients with well stocked pantry shelves and a holiday store filled wall to wall with gifts.
“Beginning with preparation for delivery of Thanksgiving food baskets, and continuing right through the Christmas and Chanukah holidays,” said Care & Share president, Barb Buzzelli, “the community traditionally demonstrates its gift giving spirit, providing armloads of donations and hours and hours of volunteer support. But this year, in a time when we worried that levels of assistance might reflect the declining economy, we were constantly surprised – and delighted – by all that everyone has done. Such care and help from so many truly reflects the giving spirit for which this community has always been known.”
Care & Share was founded nearly twenty years ago in 1989 by four women who provided Thanksgiving food baskets to eight local families. This year, the non-profit all-volunteer organization assisted 154 East Lyme/Niantic and Salem families, including over 400 individuals, through its holiday food basket program and holiday store, wrapping up a year of such other Care & Share assistance programs as emergency assistance, general food deliveries, scholarships and camperships.
The wave of holiday giving started back in October when numerous church and school groups ran pre-holiday food drives to fill the pantry’s shelves for the winter season. Then in November, Food Pantry co-chairs, Jim and Carol Indorato, noticed an influx of people stopping by the 11 Hope Street food pantry behind the Niantic Cinemas to ask what was needed for the Thanksgiving holiday before returning with desired items. Help came from schools, churches, civic organizations, retailers and businesses, neighborhood organizations and families and individuals of all ages. A Children’s Food Drive, for example, was held by third graders in the Lilly B. Haynes Elementary School, resulting in gifts of macaroni and cheese, cocoa, peanut butter /jelly and cold cereals. Eight students from St. Bernard’s School spent over four hours one Saturday in November working at the Pantry, where they prepared all of the paper good bags to go out with the Thanksgiving baskets, checked expiration dates, stocked the shelves and counted turkeys and chickens.
In addition to the countless donations of food left at the Pantry by anonymous individuals and families, numerous contributions came from scouts, the grammar schools, the middle school, the high school, the high school Key Club and the high school Honor Society, as well as local churches and organizations, including the Lions, the Leo’s, the Rotary Club and the Muffin Men. The East Lyme High School Student Senate donated $600 worth of gift cards and movie tickets, and one enterprising student and her parents took the initiative to stand outside of Stop & Shop and hand a flyer of Food Pantry needs to shoppers going into the store, resulting in bags and bags of needed holiday items. Thanks to such endeavors and generosity, over 83 food baskets were packed and delivered on Saturday, December 20, despite the snow. And, as always, a special thanks is given to the Lions and the LEOs, who each year join with Care & Share in the food basket program, bringing fresh produce, milk, eggs, etc. on the morning of delivery and taking responsibility for 40 of the 99 baskets delivered that weekend from the Pantry.
Thanks to the generosity of the Mitchell Trust, this year’s Holiday Store was located at 17 Hope Street, and within days of its opening as Care & Share’s gift donation collection site, it began to fill with warm coats and blankets along with gift items to be boxed and wrapped for over 100 clients. By the time of December 13th client “shopping day,” the store was so full of gifts that one volunteer remarked that it looked like “our very own FAO Schwarz,” paying tribute to the Boy Scouts in Salem who made Care & Share the main recipient of their toy drive this year. One giant stuffed teddy bear, perched atop a rack of jackets, was so popular that it was earmarked for a client drawing to make certain that all had an equal chance to bring it home.
Throughout the town, over 150 gift tags for children’s toys hung from Angel Trees hosted by Chelsea Bank, Liberty Bank, Savings Institute, Smith Acres, Stop & Shop and That Look. Although most of the items displayed at the Holiday Store are matched with the needs and wishes of Care & Share client families and individuals, the racks of gently used warm coats and outer wear are also made available to any area resident who may be in need. Coats and jackets will continue to be available in the coming month as long as supplies last. Anyone interested in receiving a coat/jacket should call Care & Share at 739-8502 to arrange for someone to meet them at the Hope Street store.
The holidays, of course, are a particularly festive time, and as if caught up in the cheer and creativity of celebration, a number of organizations sponsored special fundraisers and drives. Although the names of supporters and fundraisers are too many to mention all, three of special note were the annual Care & Share Benefit Evening of Hors d’oeuvres and Wine Tasting, sponsored by Carmine’s in cooperation with Constantine’s; Holdridge’s “Weekend of Giving,” and a “Holiday-altering experience” Smith’s Acres/Mermaid Liquors wine tasting and silent auction, which netted $6059.00 for the benefit of Care & Share and its clients.
“Thanks to the support and generosity of the entire community, the holiday season is always the high point of the Care & Share giving year,” concluded Buzzelli. “This year, however, appears to be particularly notable, both in terms of the needs met and the creativity and benevolence of those who helped us meet them. To all, both those mentioned here, and the many, many more who also helped with gifts of cheer, food, financial support and time, we say ‘Thank you, and a happy new year!’”

CARE & SHARE INTRODUCES NEW FACE ON INTERNET |
|
| |
CARE & SHARE INTRODUCES NEW FACE ON INTERNET Responding to the heightened need to communicate more effectively with its many and varied stakeholders, Care & Share of East Lyme, Inc. has revamped its old web site into a new and more dynamic communications medium:
www.careandshareofEL.org
“Care & Share’s success in meeting the pace and challenge of the increasing needs of our clients depends heavily on our ability to find and rally more volunteers, more community partners, more supporters,” said Barbara Buzzelli, Care & Share president. “This is a task that requires that we pull out all communications stops. In short, we needed to supplement and strengthen our original basic website and turn it into an internet engine that will work on multiple levels and thereby improve our ability to reach more and to provide more.”
The new site, launched just in time for the holiday rush, features a multi-level site designed to help friends, volunteers and clients learn about the nearly 20-year-old all-volunteer organization. In addition to pages covering such key Care & Share information as its 501(c)(3) nonprofit status and news about upcoming events and activities, the site features sections on both Giving Assistance and Getting Assistance.
Focusing on how individuals and groups can help, Giving Assistance includes explanations of the workings of the food pantry and its current needs, as well as information about cash donations for needs ranging from grocery gift cards to scholarships, camperships and emergency needs such as energy assistance. Volunteering opportunities also are explained, including holiday family sponsorships and the holiday store.
Getting Assistance provides an explanation of the process by which individuals and families can become clients, information regarding the availability of assistance from the food and bread program, as well as the availability of emergency assistance, and how it may be obtained.
Information about and applications for campership and scholarship programs will also be posted.
Creation of the new site was made possible thanks to the generous contribution of Care & Share member, Karen Kari of The Kari Group of East Lyme, who led the Board in developing Website strategy and content. James Nicholas of EasyWeb Creations of Waterford handled design and technical development and Dave Lewis of Star Computers of Niantic donated website hosting. |

of operation, or arrangements may be made by calling Care & Share at
739-8502.
Donation suggestions for Christmas/Chanukah include new gifts for any age,
male/female, including teens and seniors. Suggestions include new toys and
other children’s, teen’s and adult gifts, as well as new or gently used
linens and outerwear, such as winter coats or jackets. Gift cards for such
items as phone, gas and groceries are also welcome. For donors who would
like to fill specific gift wishes, Care & Share holiday trees tagged with
individual or family gift requests may be found at several merchants and
banks in Niantic and East Lyme, including Chelsea Bank, That Look, Liberty
Bank, Savings Institute, Stop & Shop and Smith Acres.
The shop is the non-profit organization’s central location through December
12 for collection of donations for those in need in East Lyme/Niantic and
Salem. On December 13, the location will then be open to clients as a
holiday shop to pick up donated items.
In addition to its Holiday Store, Care & Share maintains a year-round food
pantry, which during the holiday season focuses its attention on the
preparation of Thanksgiving and Christmas/Chanukah baskets for distribution
to community residents in need. Now, with Thanksgiving just around the
corner, Care & Share welcomes the donation of non-perishable food and paper
products to help fill client food baskets.
Holiday menu items, including stuffing, cranberry sauce, canned potatoes,
gravy, corn, green beans, peas and pumpkin are particularly desired. Food
items may be delivered to the Care & Share Pantry at 11 Hope Street (behind
Niantic Cinema) or left in Care & Share food collection boxes in most banks,
retail and community buildings. Frozen turkeys and chickens should be
delivered to the Care & Share Pantry. Food for Thanksgiving should be
received by November 15. Food for Christmas/Chanukah baskets should be
delivered to Care & Share by December 13. |

EAST LYME CHARITY FINDS PLACE FOR ITS HOLIDAY SHOP |
|
| |
|
|
| |
An East Lyme charity struggling to find a spot for its holiday shop now has a place to call home.
Care & Share of East Lyme will be able to set up its holiday shop at 17 Hope Street in Niantic, a location donated by the Mitchell Trust, said Care & Share President Barbara Buzzelli.
The charity, which also operates a food pantry in Niantic and typically has a home for its shop by now, was having trouble finding a spot this year.
The shop is the charity’s central location during the holidays to collect donations such as coats and new toys for the needy in East Lyme and Salem. On December 13, the location transforms into a holiday shop where clients can pick up donated items.
“I feel very relieved,” said Buzzelli. “This is a big check off our list.”
Volunteers hope to have the space open by November 1. |

RELL PRAISES FOOD PANTRY |
|
| |
|
|
| |
Governor M. Jodi Rell recently praised an East Lyme Food Pantry, its organizers and volunteers for their many years of serving needy local families and raising awareness of hunger in the community.
Last month, Rell launched a special summertime “Governor’s Care & Share Drive” in response to a dramatic rise in the number of Connecticut residents needing help in feeding their families this year.
The governor said East Lyme residents can be assured that when they donate to Care & Share of East Lyme, at 11 Hope Street, Niantic, their contributions will be used specifically by the local agency to feed needy individuals and families in their community.
Care & Share of East Lyme, established in 1989, five years after the state initiative, also runs holiday programs and offers emergency assistance, scholarship and summer camperships. |

DUPLICATE USE OF CARE & SHARE NAME CALLS FOR CLARIFICATION |
|
| |
|
|
| |
The needs may be the same, as well as the organizations’ names. However, to clarify for friends and supporters of Care & Share of East Lyme, Inc., who may have heard in the news of the newly announced Governor’s Care & Share Drive, the two organizations, and their fund-raising campaigns, are distinct and separate.
Care & Share of East Lyme, Inc., incorporated as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, volunteer organization, has been helping its neighbors since 1989 with food and emergency assistance, among other services. This past year alone, thanks to the generous support of the surrounding communities, Care & Share of East Lyme, Inc. assisted over 400 East Lyme/Niantic and Salem individuals and families in need.
Today, however, as the economy has tightened and needs rapidly increase, charitable organizations such as Care & Share of East Lyme are reaching out to their supporters with renewed urgency in order to keep pace with the needs of the community. “We know that it is for this similar purpose that Governor Rell has launched the statewide Care & Share fund-raising drive from her office, and we certainly endorse that objective,” said Barbara Buzzelli, president of Care & Share of East Lyme. “However, as we continue to see increases in both the number of clients and assistance requests, we feel the need to clarify for our local community residents and business partners that these are two separate Care & Share campaigns. Care & Share of East Lyme, Inc., specifically, does not receive funding through the Governor’s campaign, and remains in need of your generous support.”
Care & Share of East Lyme runs a food pantry at 11 Hope St., Niantic, behind Niantic Cinemas, as one of several year-round community service programs. Others include its Thanksgiving and Holiday food baskets and bread program, operation of a Holiday Store, as well as provision of emergency assistance, scholarships and summer camperships. ELEVEN YEAR OLD DIGS UP CARE & SHARE DIAMOND |
|
| |
|
|
| |
When Ashlyn Spring Salafia of East Lyme dug deep in the sand during this year’s East Lyme Day Care & Share Diamond Dig, she came up with a plastic bauble that could be turned in for two large cheese pizzas, compliments of Family Pizza, five diamond-like zircons, and the real McCoy – a certified diamond valued at $500. Quite a trick, considering that Ashlyn’s diamond was buried in a box of sand along with approximately 400 diamond-look-alikes, all donated by Northern Light Gems, Niantic.
For the past three years, Care & Share of East Lyme, Inc. has run its benefit Diamond Dig in which hundreds of hopefuls take a chance at uncovering a true diamond by digging in a bucket of sand. Jeweler Antonio Suarez, owner of the popular Pennsylvania Avenue jewelry store, contributes the diamond and zircons, and appraises the findings of each $1 shovelful of sand before notifying the winner following the event.
For Ashlyn, winning was not so much surprising as predictable. “She is always winning something,” said her mother, Laura. And yet, while Ashlyn may indeed seem to have luck when it comes to diamond digs and other games of chance, it is her dance competition awards of which she is most proud, having won titles throughout New England for the past 8 years. Who knows, perhaps in the next such competition, she will sport a new necklace or ring complete with the Diamond Dig diamond – just for good luck, of course!

CARE & SHARE SEEKS FOOD FOR PANTRY SHELVES |
|
| |
|
|
| |
Noting an increase in food requests as the economy tightens, Care & Share of East Lyme, Inc. is issuing a call to the community for help in restocking its pantry supplies, which are dwindling rapidly. A nonprofit, volunteer organization, Care & Share operates a year-round food pantry for the benefit of East Lyme, Niantic and Salem families and individuals in need. Nonperishable food items, including canned soups, fruits, vegetables and cereal , as well as such household goods as paper towels, toilet paper, soap and toothpaste, are particularly needed. Frozen meats, including packages of hamburger, hotdogs and 4 to 5 lb. chickens, are also welcomed.
Donations may be brought to the Care & Food Pantry, at 11 Hope St., Niantic (behind Niantic Theater), on the 1st and 3rd Saturday of the month, from 11 am to 1 pm when Care & Share volunteers will be available to receive it. To make delivery arrangements on other than the specified Saturdays, please call 739-8502. In addition, nonperishable items may be placed in any of several Care & Share collection boxes located in many community churches, organizations and retailers, including the major food stores. Please remember to check expiration dates on all food contributions.
The Food Pantry is one of several year-round Care & Share community service programs. Others include its Thanksgiving and Holiday food baskets and bread program, operation of a Holiday Store, as well as provision of emergency assistance, scholarships and summer camperships. Established in 1989 by a group of community residents to provide assistance to eight East Lyme families in need, Care & Share today is incorporated as a nonprofit charitable organization serving over 400 East Lyme, Niantic and Salem families in need. It is entirely volunteer run and generously supported by numerous community organizations, businesses, schools, churches, individuals and donors. |

CREATIVE CONTRIBUTIONS SUPPORT CARE & SHARE |
|
| |
|
|
| |
Recipients of this year’s Care & Share holiday food baskets may find cans decorated with a little heart with a name inside. The heart, which identifies one of the 57 East Lyme Center School second graders who marched to the Care & Share food pantry to deliver their gifts, symbolizes the love with which the gift was given.
Conducted as part of the school’s Citizenship Week program, the visit to the Care & Share pantry turned out to be a hands-on learning experience not only for the second graders, but for volunteers at the food pantry who receive, pack and distribute the hundreds of thousands of cans, jars and boxes of food and household goods received at the pantry throughout the year. As summarized by Jim and Carol Indorato of East Lyme, who co-chair the Hope Street facility’s operations, “We are so fortunate to see so much generosity from community supporters, residents and businesses alike, people of all ages, all places in life, not to mention the imaginative and creative ways which they have used to collect contributions.”
High on their list of examples were the literally carloads of pasta and other non-perishables collected by East Lyme High School students during the school-wide Spirit Week Competition. “We filled an entire van,” said Jim Indorato, adding that a total of three cars were needed to transport all that had been collected in the Spirit Week competition, particularly the pasta collected by the competition-winning ninth and eleventh grades. And, while high school students were observing their annual Spirit Week, East Lyme Middle School fifth and sixth graders took advantage of the spirits in another way, using the occasion of their Halloween Dance to collect another two large cartons of goodies for Care & Share. The Leos at the Middle have also sponsored a dance this fall and another is in the works, as well as a planned toy drive, with all donations going to the aid of Care & Share clients.
“As we enter into the holiday season, we can’t help but express our thanks to so many who have done so much throughout the year to keep our shelves full. We continue to be surprised and delighted by the thoughtfulness and creative thinking that we see,” Indorato said. Over the past months, Care & Share clients have benefited from food and/or other contributions made at private anniversary, birthday and other parties where food items or donations were received in lieu of gifts. “We are always delighted to see the many creative ways in which the town comes to our support,” he said, mentioning, for example, 20 backpacks filled with school supplies by members of Christ Lutheran Church.
“While we are beginning now to distribute Thanksgiving as well as Chanukah and Christmas baskets, we are particularly grateful for all the support we receive throughout the year,” said Care & Share president Barbara Buzzelli. “Individuals, churches, schools, civic organizations, neighborhood associations and businesses alike have all pitched in, proving once again the generous heart shown by this community. And for that, we collectively say, ‘Thank you!’” |
